To fill the data gap in priority maternal and newborn health (MNH) indicators in Ethiopia and assess factors associated with the initiation and continuation of care, Â鶹ÊÓƵ Ethiopia implemented a longitudinal survey that enrolled and followed pregnant women at six-weeks, six-months, and one-year postpartum.

This report summarizes key findings from the six-week postpartum survey. During the six-week postpartum interview, resident enumerators collected information on essential MNH services, including receipt, timing, and specific components of antenatal care (ANC), delivery care, and immediate postnatal and neonatal services.

Data collection for the six-week postpartum interview occurred between November 2021 and November 2022. Among 2,297 eligible women, 2,072 completed the interview.

Conducted in four regions in Ethiopia, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Ethiopia second cohort of the longitudinal survey (2021-2023), similar to the first cohort (2019-2021), enrolls pregnant women and follows them at six-weeks, six-months, and one-year postpartum. The goal of the panel survey is to monitor the use of essential MNH services and assess individual, partner, and community factors associated with service utilization. Each survey is tailored to the relevant period of women’s pregnancy and childbirth experiences, covering a range of priority RMNH indicators identified by the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
This report summarizes key findings from the baseline survey of Â鶹ÊÓƵ Ethiopia’s second cohort, referred to as Â鶹ÊÓƵ Ethiopia Cohort 2.

An unmet need for contraception is associated with unintended pregnancy and adverse maternal and childhood outcomes. Family planning counselling is linked with reduced unmet need for contraception. However, evidence is lacking in Ethiopia on the impact of integrated family planning counselling on the unmet need for
contraception. This study aimed to examine the association between family planning counselling and the unmet need for contraception in Ethiopia.

Agricultural production and household food security are hypothesized to play a critical role connecting climate change to downstream effects on women’s health, especially in communities dependent on rainfed agriculture. Seasonal variability in agriculture strains food and income resources and makes it a challenging time for households to manage a pregnancy or afford a new child. Yet, there are few direct assessments of the role locally varying agricultural quality plays on women’s health, especially reproductive health. In this paper we build on and integrate ideas from past studies focused on climate change and growing season quality in low-income countries with those on reproductive health to examine how variation in local seasonal agricultural quality relates to childbearing goals and family planning use in three countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Uganda. We use rich, spatially referenced data from the Â鶹ÊÓƵ individual surveys with detailed information on childbearing preferences and family planning decisions.

Knowledge of infectious diseases and self-action are vital to disease control and prevention. Yet, little is known about the factors associated with knowledge of and self-action to prevent the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This study accomplishes two objectives. Firstly, we examine the determinants of COVID-19 knowledge and preventive knowledge among women in four sub-Saharan African countries (Kenya, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burkina Faso). Secondly, we explore the factors associated with self-action to prevent COVID-19 infections among these women. Data for the study are from the Performance for Monitoring Action COVID-19 Survey, conducted in June and July 2020 among women aged 15–49.

One of the main challenges to achieving maternal and neonatal health-related goals in developing countries is high fertility, resulting, in part, from lower family planning coverage. In Ethiopia, the coverage of modern contraceptive use among all women under reproductive age is below 40%. To inform program efforts to effectively meet contraceptive needs, it is essential to identify factors associated with the uptake of contraception and design geographically targeted intervention mechanisms guided by up-to-date prevalence maps that show the geographic distribution of contraceptive use across different administrative areas in the country.

Our objectives were to explore the spatial distribution of modern contraceptive use and identify determinant factors that affect the uptake of modern contraception among women who need it.

Our objective was to explore how three measures of pregnancy preferences—measuring timing-based intentions, emotional orientation, and planning status—were related to the uptake of postpartum family planning within one year after birth. Additionally, we tested whether the relationship between each measure and postpartum family planning uptake differs by parity, a key determinant of fertility preference. Adjusted hazards regression results show that the timing-based measure, specifically having a mistimed pregnancy, and the emotional response measure, specifically being unhappy, were associated with contraceptive uptake in the extended postpartum period, while those related to pregnancy planning, as measured by an adapted London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy, were not.
